Can you use outlook email program if you don't have a server?

I am hooked to the Interent and my on-line college uses Outlook. However I don't have a server number to put in in, protocol, etc. in order to use Outlook. Is there a generic server out there to use? Does anyone have a work around for this?

Can you use outlook email program if you don't have a server?
Due to security reasons the email servers do not provide a open/generic login to send/receive emails. To use Outlook Express you need to register with a POP3 mail server. You may also get your Yahoo account upgraded to POP3 access. Once your account is POP3 enabled, you will be able to download mails into Outlook automatically using the settings provided by the email service provider and you will also get an SMTP outgoing server address which can be used to send mails using Outlook.

Reply:Well, you do seem to know that Outlook is merely an e-mail Client; but then you're asking for a "generic" server?

I wonder if you know that to download your mail from your e-mail server, you need to configure your e-mail Client for the task?

For example, you need to give the POP and SMTP settings to configure Yahoo so that you can access your Yahoo Mail; and again, configure the POP and SMTP settings for Gmail to access that etc. etc.

And then, you need to configure things for your profile.

The links I've given you below will guide you through what you need to do step-by-step to set up your MS Outlook for you. However, you'll need to ask your Teacher to help you with the POP and SMTP or Imap settings because these are usually provided by the ISP whose connections they use.

All the best.

Cheers
