install linux or bsd and then install one of the free email servers programs such as sendmail (sendmail.org). Many times, when you install Linux or bsd there is an option to install a mail server. then you just need to configure it. all of these are free and you just need to provide the server.
You cannot install an exchange server because Exchange costs money and so does Microsoft Windows (the OS).
How can i build an email server from scratch at no cost?
No cost?
You will need a PC, and a Server based OS (Operating System).
loaded with Exchange Server or a similiar program. Dunno if you can do it for free though.
