i don't know, maybe they make money by posting ads on the websites they display the mail in.like yahoo there's lots of ads on yahoo.com, same as the rest.
Reply:They have ads in their website which helps them to manage the cost of running. Gmail have an ad system which displays ad's similar to ur mail content, yahoo also have ads in their site.
